The Partition
shows that an entity set can be partitioned in a set of other entities
belonging to the same type as the entity to be partitioned. The partition symbol is an alternative
representation of partitioning to containement of entity sets. This
special symbol is often used to depict an orthogonal partitioning, i.e.
an additional and independent partitioning. The entity set which is partitioned is connected to the partition shape with an edge at the top of the triangle (in the example on the left side, "Person"). The partions will be connected on the longest side of the triangular (on the right side, "Male Person" and "Female Person"). |
